Apple has acquired MotionVFX, a company known for developing plug-ins, templates and visual effects tools used by video editors working with Final Cut Pro. Financial terms of the acquisition were not disclosed.
In a message posted on its website, MotionVFX confirmed the deal and said joining Apple would help it continue building tools for creators and editors. “We are extremely excited to share that MotionVFX is joining the Apple team to continue to empower creators and editors to do their best work,” the company said.
Founded in 2009 and based in Warsaw, MotionVFX has spent more than a decade developing visual effects, graphics templates and advanced editing tools for professional video editors.
Its products are widely used by creators who rely on Final Cut Pro, offering additional capabilities and design elements that extend the software’s built-in functionality. The company sells access to many of its tools through subscription packages that start at around $29 per month.
Apple has not publicly commented on the acquisition and typically does not disclose details about its deals. The purchase could strengthen Apple’s position in professional video editing, particularly as it competes with tools such as Adobe Premiere Pro and the broader Adobe Creative Cloud suite.
Bringing MotionVFX’s capabilities closer to Apple’s ecosystem could allow the company to integrate more advanced visual effects, templates and creative tools directly into its own software. The move also comes as Apple expands its subscription offerings for creative professionals.
Earlier this year, Apple introduced Creator Studio, a bundle that provides access to several creative applications and premium content.
The subscription package includes Final Cut Pro, Logic Pro and Pixelmator Pro on Mac and iPad, along with Motion, Compressor and MainStage on Mac. It also includes additional templates and assets for Apple’s iWork apps such as Keynote, Pages and Numbers. Creator Studio is priced at $12.99 per month or $129 per year.
By acquiring MotionVFX, Apple may be aiming to enhance the value of that bundle and attract more creators to its platform. The move also highlights the growing importance of Apple’s services business, which has become one of the company’s fastest-growing segments.
In the most recent fiscal year, services accounted for more than 26 percent of Apple’s revenue, a sharp increase from roughly 8.5 percent in 2015.
